The Promenade des Anglais takes its name from the English aristocracy who used to come and stay in Nice. The city was for a long time a highly appreciated tourist destination for this high-end clientele. Nice charmed for its mild climate and pleasant setting. But these tourists had to stroll along the beach on a simple dirt road. It was not earlier than in the nineteenth century that great works had be done, thanks to the initiative of the Reverend Lewis Way. Indeed, he raised funds to finance the construction of the Promenade des Anglais. These works have been completed in 1824 but only when Nice was officially attached to France, in 1860, the city adopted the name “Promenade des Anglais”. The ‘Promenade des Anglais’ extends from the airport to the Quai des Etats-Unis over nearly 7 kilometers and is bordered by beautiful palaces, casinos, hotels and residential buildings. Among the most famous is the Palais de la Méditerranée, funded by an American businessman Jay Gould, and considered as a masterpiece of Art Deco style.
